Finding Meaning in Medicine is a growing community of colleagues who share your values. Also, find resources and many more links regarding physician / medical student / healthcare professional health and wellness. We hope to see you online!
Arts & Healing Network, an organization founded by Marion Weber, brings together a diverse group of artists who use their art for healing work. You'll enjoy this site!
The Collaborative on Health and the Environment is another Commonweal program rattling the cages of environmental polluters! CHE is a nonpartisan partnership network working to further knowledge, action and cooperation regarding environmental contributors to disease.
Commonweal is a small, 25-year-old non-profit health and environmental research institute in the Point Reyes National Seashore outside the coastal town of Bolinas, California. Principal areas of work are with (1) people with cancer; (2) health professionals; (3) children and young adults with learning and social difficulties, and the childcare professionals who work with them; and (4) the global search for a healthy and sustainable future. ISHI has been a project of Commonweal since 1991.
Commonweal Cancer Help Program is dedicated to helping people seeking physical, emotional, and spiritual healing in the face of cancer. The workshops offer a rich variety of opportunities for both intellectual and experiential learning. The CCHP is a place to explore the issues, choices, feelings and concerns that people with cancer often have. In 1993, the CCHP was the subject of an hour-long PBS documentary by Bill Moyers entitled "Wounded Healers," the final segment in his five-part series, "Healing and the Mind."
Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen is the Founder and Director of the Institute for the Study of Health and Illness at Commonweal. You can learn more about her work, her schedule of speaking engagements and how to contact her when you visit Rachel's home page.

Many organizations around the country are involved in physician renewal and well-being. This list is far from complete. It is meant to inform and does not constitute an endorsement. We thank Hanna Sherman, MD for providing this list. Hanna works with physicians and hospital administration to support physician well-being. She can be reached at Hbsherman1@aol.com.

In today's world, many physicians are troubled. In spite of achieving mastery of his or her specialty and, to varying degrees, financial success, something is missing: a lack of excitement, loss of meaning, and/or a feeling that there is "something else." For some, this produces a sense of ongoing frustration and anger. For others, it is a sense of melancholy or restlessness of spirit. The Grapevine Process™ was designed to address these circumstances by facilitating learning, self-assessment and planning within a safe and supportive community. The format consists of a two day opening retreat followed by 10 weeks of online assessment, study and communal / faculty interaction and concludes with a one day closing retreat.

Institute for Healing in Society and Medicine
IHSM is dedicated to catalyzing the transformation of medicine from "the inside out" by reconnecting individual healthcare providers with the richness of their own inner lives, their authentic professional mission, and with the sacred roots of medicine. Our educational programs focus on clarifying personal and professional meaning and mission, living life through a commitment to purpose and integrity, cultivating awareness to allow for more future possibilities, and developing better interpersonal connections and social support for healthcare providers, educators, patients, and those trying to prevent illness. By promoting professional awareness in the lives of healthcare providers, IHSM will restore healing as the primary focus of medicine.

Mindfulness in Medicine Mindful Living Programs for Health Professionals
Mindful Living Programs are fully accredited, professional education retreats for health care professionals such as physicians, nurses, psychologists, and counselors, which are held in several locations in Northern and Southern California, including at Commonweal in Bolinas, California. At these workshops, participants will learn the techniques and practices of mindfulness meditation, a powerful way to manage stress, help restore and maintain a sense of personal balance and to avoid the emotional and physical depletion that can accompany our work in today's highly stressful medical marketplace.
The retreats offer an experiential, direct, hands-on program that includes guided and silent meditation, yoga and chi kung practice, walking meditation, group discussion and dialogue. Health Professionals participating in these Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Retreats will learn skills that have been consistently documented as profoundly beneficial for the treatment and prevention of stress-related illnesses and conditions.
